Patrick Mahomes is bringing his star power to Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback will call “riders up” in the paddock prior to the Run for the Roses. The role is often reserved for Louisville or Kentucky natives, like rapper Jack Harlow in 2022, but Churchill Downs apparently made an exception for the reigning Super Bowl and NFL MVP.
Prior to the race, Mahomes and his wife, Brittany, were filmed walking the red carpet.
While they did so, Mahomes bumped into Jim McIngvale, the furniture magnate better known as “Mattress Mack” who has developed a reputation for his placing massive sports wagers.
McIngvale shook Mahomes’ hand and offered a funny comment.
“You cost me millions betting against you,” McIngvale said.
“Sorry about that one,” Mahomes said with a laugh. “You gotta be with me next time.”

To the surprise of some, McIngvale didn’t bet on Super Bowl LVII, during which Mahomes and the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles. His losses at the hands of Mahomes must have come earlier in Mahomes’ impressive career.
Mahomes is one of countless celebrities in attendance at the Derby, including several prominent quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen are also among the crowd at Churchill Downs.
