JUST IN: 10 MINUTES AGO: GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski and Dem Sen. Jeanne Shaheen introduced a bill to stop Donald Trump from trying to take control of Greenland.
**WASHINGTON —** In a rare bipartisan move, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire introduced new legislation aimed at blocking any attempt by former President Donald Trump to assert U.S. control over Greenland.
The bill, introduced minutes ago, would prohibit the use of federal funds or executive authority to negotiate, purchase, or otherwise acquire Greenland without explicit approval from Congress. Lawmakers said the measure is designed to reaffirm congressional oversight of foreign policy and prevent unilateral actions involving sovereign territory.
Trump has previously floated the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland, calling it a strategic necessity, comments that drew sharp criticism from Denmark and Greenlandic leaders. While no formal negotiations are currently underway, Murkowski and Shaheen said the legislation is intended to preempt any renewed effort should Trump return to office.
“This is about respecting international law and the self-determination of the people of Greenland,” Shaheen said in a brief statement. Murkowski added that foreign policy decisions of this magnitude “cannot be made on impulse.”
The bill is expected to face debate in the coming days, as it adds to growing congressional scrutiny of presidential authority in matters of international diplomacy and territorial ambition.
