Minneapolis — A wave of shock and anger spread across Minneapolis and beyond this week after video emerged showing a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shoot and kill **37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good** during a federal enforcement operation in a residential neighborhood on **Jan. 7, 2026**. Good, a Minnesota resident and mother of three, died after being struck by gunfire during a confrontation captured in cellphone and bystander footage that has now gone viral.
The footage shows several ICE agents surrounding Good’s SUV on East 34th Street and Portland Avenue as she attempts to move her vehicle. One officer is seen walking toward the front of the SUV; moments later, at least two shots are fired into the vehicle. The SUV then collides with two parked cars and comes to a stop. Good was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
Federal officials, including the **Department of Homeland Security (DHS)** and ICE, have defended the shooting, asserting that the agent acted in self-defense after the vehicle threatened officers. DHS spokespersons labeled the incident a response to an attempted use of the vehicle as a weapon.
However, local authorities and many witnesses dispute that account. Minneapolis Mayor **Jacob Frey** called the federal narrative “a garbage narrative” after reviewing the video, and said the available footage did not show Good posing a clear danger to the agents. **Minnesota Governor Tim Walz** has also criticized the operation, saying video evidence contradicts claims made by federal official
The shooting has reignited heated debate over ICE’s role and the use of force by federal agents, particularly in areas with recent histories of conflict between law enforcement and communities of color. Protesters have gathered near the site of the shooting, calling for accountability and for federal agents to withdraw from the city.
Investigations are now underway by the **FBI** and the **Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension** to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter. Meanwhile, Good’s family, neighbors, and critics nationwide are demanding answers as video of the incident continues circulating on social media and news outlets.
